I primi passi del Rugby League in Italia risalgo intorno primi anni ’50 e sono legati ai contatti intercorsi tra alcuni dirigenti di squadre torinesi con le Federazioni Francese e Inglese per l’organizzazione di una sorta di esperimento di neorugby, con l’intento far conoscere anche nel nostro Paese questo nuovo tipo di gioco.

Il rugby a 13 venne fin dall’inizio osteggiato dalla FIR. Dopo alcuni anni di continue tournée internazionali e campionati interni, grazie alla costituzione nel 1958 a Treviso della FIAR 13 (Federazione Italiana Amatori Rugby a 13) e il successivo riconoscimento internazionale da parte della Rugby Football League questo sport cominciò ad avere un numero sempre maggiore di simpatizzanti sia tra i giocatori di rugby che tra gli spettatori italiani.

Sul finire degli anni ’60 a seguito delle continue minacce e squalifiche da parte della FIR nei confronti di quei giocatori che si alternavano tra il Rugby a 15 e quello a 13, la FIAR perse via via adesioni fino a cessare di esistere.

La rinascita del Rugby League in Italia nel 1995, è legata alla passione e alla volontà di due italo-australiani, Dominic Pezzano e John Benigni, che trasformarono la vecchia FIAR nell’ ITALIA RUGBY LEAGUE. L’iniziale ripresa della sua attività , venne limitata a tornei internazionali e solo nel 2002 la Nazionale Italiana di Rugby League ritornò a giocare in Italia con un triangolare internazionale tra le nazionali della Repubblica del Kazan e della Scozia.

Nel gennaio 2008 dalla naturale evoluzione Italia Rugby League nasce la F.I.R.L - Federazione Italiana Rugby League al fine di dare vita ad un movimento sportivo di ampio respiro capace di competere nel ranking internazionale di Rugby League.

La nazionale Italiana, infatti, sia nella stagione 2008 che in quella 2009, ha vinto l’European Shield, ottenendo delle vittorie nette e meritate.

La Federazione Italiana Rugby League, sorge nel gennaio 2008 come naturale evoluzione della Italia Rugby League sorta nel 1995, per riportare nel nostro Paese il rugby a 13 scomparso dagli anni’60.

La F.I.R.L è un’associazione no-profit iscritta presso il registro delle imprese, che ha come obiettivo quello di realizzare un circuito associativo per diffondere e sviluppare il gioco del Rugby League, ma soprattutto di creare in Italia, un centro di riferimento per giocatori, club o semplici tifosi, perapprendere o migliorare le conoscenze tecniche e tattiche di questo grande sport. Il rugby a 13 deve essere considerato come una disciplina sportiva, autonoma ed indipendente. Avendo le stesse basi e valori del rugby Union, il rugby league si differenzia per le sue caratteristiche di velocità e spettacolarità, le quali lo portano ad essere uno sport a divertimento puro e di maggior comprensibilità da parte degli inesperti di questa disciplina.

Da far rilevare, inoltre, che il rugby a 13, per la sua semplicità cognitiva, è molto apprezzato anche dai neofiti delle discipline ovali, in quanto è altamente percepibile e capibile anche da coloro i quali hanno visto per la prima volta un pallone ovale.

La Nazionale Italiana di rugby league, ha recentemente ottenuto grandi successi a livello internazionale, vincendo per il secondo anno consecutivo la competizione organizzata dalla Rugby League European Federation, l’ Euro Shield.

Gli enormi sforzi della FIRL sopportati in questi ultimi anni, hanno dato i loro frutti.

 Visto l’elevato standard della Nazionale Italiana, la Rugby League European Federation, ha accolto l’Italia tra le migliori selezioni continentali, al fine di competere nell’European Cup.

In 1950, an Italian team from Turin tours the North of England. Italy later runs a domestic competition. In 1960, Italy played Australia in two international matches, but the game began to disappear in the country over the course of the next decade. In 1958, within Treviso under the incorporation of Notary Dr. Luigi Di Francia, he formed the Italian Federation of Amateur Rugby 13 (FIAR 13). In 2009, Italy will be fielding two separate teams, one based in Europe, playing in the European Cup, and one based in Australia.

The Italian Federation Rugby League (FIRL) was created in January, 2008 and represents Italy in international rugby league tournaments. Rugby league was played in Italy during the 1950's and 1960's with teams from England, France and Australia touring. After the 1960's rugby league slowly disappeared from the sporting landscape in Italy.

FIRL is a non-profit organisation, whose main aim is to promote the core values of rugby league game increasing the attractiveness of the sport to new participants. The core values are defined as teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship: through its values, the game has a uniting force. It helps to build characters. The social aspects of the game must not be understated and these have great benefits for local communities and society in general. The game is a way of life.
